How do I know if there is mold in my house?

The three main factors that indicate mold growth include symptoms, smell and sight. It is recommended that you familiarize yourself with them so you know what to look for. It is common for people to have mold in their homes for years without them being aware of it, and when they realize it, major problems with health and safety have already arisen.

One of the best ways to determine whether your home has mold, is to pay attention to how often you find yourself sniffling, coughing, sneezing or experiencing other congestion issues. If you notice it happens more often at home than at work, or vice versa, then you likely have a mold issue at that location.

Even without feeling any symptons, mold could still be hidden away. Damp, musty smells must not go ignored as they are strong indicators that mold is growing close by. Just because the smell is faint does not mean that there is no mold hidden behind walls and floors. You must take precautions if you start noticing a mold smell.

The third indicator of mold is actual sights of mold growth. While this may seem slightly obvious, it is something we all need to be aware of. Many people do not know what to look for when it comes to mold, and mold is commonly mistook for dirt or soot.  Mold comes in a variety of different forms and colors, from spotty and black to stringy and white. It also comes in brown and green, and can even turn purple or pink when the source is behind wall paper or vinyl.

It is important not to get too comfortable, though, if it appears to be only a small amount of mold. Even a few spots can indicate that there is a much larger mold colony behind closed doors.
