How can I identify asbestos?

Asbestos is difficult to identify, as it comes in many forms and is used in many products.

There are a few things you can look out for, though, if you are worried that your home contains asbestos. The first thing you'll want to look at is what year your home was built, as homes built before the mid 1980's typically had asbestos insulation. But just because your home was built after the 1980's does not guarantee your home is asbestos-free, as there are still quite a few homes that used a asbestos products before they was completely banned.

You can also find out if there is asbestos in your home by determining the types of materials used in your home. For example, older bathrooms almost all have asbestos in them, as it was excellent for water-proofing, so you may find asbestos in vinyl tiles and sheeting.

Asbestos can hide in many places, so it is very important to bring in an asbestos specialist if you are planning on renovating your home, and are not 100% sure whether or not it contains asbestos.
