How can I tell if there is water damage in my home?

Whether you are buying a new home, or inspecting your current home, there are a few different things to look for to identify water damage. It is a good idea to do a brief inspection of your home every once in a while, to make sure that there are no leaking pipes, or faults in your roof.

Water damage tends to show itself in 2 areas; the walls and the ceilings/floors. Generally the main sign is discoloration or dark spots, which will appear anywhere that water damage has occurred; walls, floors and ceilings. Wall paper may start to peel back, and drywall may have cracks or feel soft. Ceilings may droop downwards or crack. The drywall tape may also start to fall back from walls and ceilings. Hard floors may become warped or buckled, and carpets will have darker stains.

If any of these signs are apparant, you should bring in a professional to further inspect the area. They wil be able to use special technology to test the moisture levels in your home, and identify the source, whether it be a leaky pipe or a leak in your roof. A water damage restoration company will walk you through the entire repair process and answer any questions you may have.
